About us

Industrial wastes, air emissions, and legacy pollution affect the health of more than 100 million people worldwide. Women and children are especially at risk. Tens of thousands of people are poisoned and killed each year. Others have reduced neurological development, damaged immune systems, and long-term health problems. The number of people affected is comparable to HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.  Yet pollution is one of the most underreported and underfunded problems in the world.

Blacksmith Institute works in some of the world's worst polluted places, sharing resources and expertise with local groups and agencies to solve pollution problems, clean up polluted sites, and save lives.

Blacksmith Institute is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to solving life-threatening pollution issues in the developing world. A global leader in this field, Blacksmith addresses a critical need to identify and clean up the world’s worst polluted places. It focuses on places where human health, especially that of women and children, is most at risk.
