Animal Disaster Management Support for Drought and Disease-Affected Areas in Zimbabwe
Aim:
To protect and improve the welfare of animals affected by disasters (drought, disease, and floods) in rural communities of Muzarabani, Hwange, and Chivi by providing emergency care, veterinary support, and long-term resilience strategies.
Objectives
1. To provide emergency veterinary treatment to sick and injured animals.
2. To distribute emergency feed and clean water during droughts.
3. To train local farmers on animal health and disaster preparedness.
4. To set up animal shelters and mobile treatment units.
5. To monitor and prevent the spread of diseases through vaccination and awareness.
Problems Faced
- Severe drought has left animals without grazing or water.
- Disease outbreaks like Foot-and-Mouth, Anthrax, and Tick-borne illnesses.
- Lack of veterinary services and access to treatment.
- Poor shelter for animals during extreme weather.
- Farmers losing livestock, impacting food and income.
