By creating the Free Zone of Nouadhibou, Law 2013-001 of January 2, 2013 brings a major innovation in terms of the concept of Free Zone. The Nouadhibou Free Zone is not an isolated enclave from the local environment, but a priority economic zone inserted in the socio-economic and environmental framework of the region in which it is established, and called to operate in symbiosis with it.
Development zones specially allocated to industrial, commercial, service, port or airport activities or to support functions (housing, tourism, commerce, leisure or offices) may be created within the free zone.
The Free Zone includes the entire agglomeration of Nouadhibou and part of the peninsula and bay of the same name, the maritime domain bordering its perimeter and those of the development zones, the entire coastal strip and the territorial waters up to '' 2 nautical miles from the coast.
The major strategic objective aimed through the Free Zone is to make Mauritania, and Nouadhibou, in particular, a privileged destination both for international investors and for national operators.
In this perspective, the Free Zone of Nouadhibou's mission is to work towards the achievement of the following objectives:
attract investment and encourage private sector development;
develop infrastructure in the area;
promote the development of Nouadhibou to make it a competitive pole and a world class regional hub;
create new jobs and improve the professional skills of national workers;
to stimulate the economic and social development of Mauritania, as a whole.
