DRC has been present in Burkina Faso since 2013, initially to support the tens of thousands of Malian refugees fleeing the conflict there, but increasingly to support the growing numbers of internally displaced Burkinabe civilians as well.
The last five years have seen a dramatic collapse in security across the country, and today Burkina Faso faces a displacement and security crisis unprecedented in the state’s 60-year history. In 2019 alone, displacement grew by nearly 550%, and as of mid-2020, Burkina Faso is home to nearly one million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and 2.2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, representing a full 10% of the national population.
