In Italy, Caritas Italiana works through 220 diocesan centres to promote family values, the development of young people and services for the disadvantaged. Among its many activities, Caritas Italiana runs centri d’ascolto – literally “listening centres” where marginalized and disadvantaged people find a welcome and a sympathetic hearing of their problems – and support services for people in prison.
The Italian Caritas is the pastoral organism constituted by the Italian Episcopal Conference in order to promote, also in collaboration with other organisms, the witness of the charity of the Italian ecclesial community, in ways appropriate to the times and needs, in view of the integral development of the man, social justice and peace, with particular attention to the last and predominantly pedagogical function.
