The Montluc military prison, located opposite Fort Montluc, opened its doors in 1921. Used during the Second World War, it became a civilian prison from 1947 and closed its doors in 2009 as a remand center for women.
Military prison of the Vichy regime from 1940 to 1943, it was requisitioned by the Nazi occupier from January 1943 until August 24, 1944. Montluc was then in Lyon and for the whole region, the main gateway to deportation and executions. Place of internment of nearly 10,000 men, women and children during the German occupation, and in particular the children of Izieu, Jean Moulin and Marc Bloch, the prison of Montluc is an emblematic place of the German policies of repression in the Lyon region.
The National Memorial of the Montluc prison opens its doors to the public in 2010 with the aim of paying tribute to the thousands of Resistance fighters, Jews, and hostages, victims of the Nazis and Vichy, during the period of the Second World War, and better understand the implementation of repressive policies.
