Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) is an enterprise owned by the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and registered as a Public Limited Company under the Companies Act, 1994 on 5 September 2011.
At present, the majority of the total electricity generated in our country is generated from natural gas based power plants and the gas reserves are very insufficient compared to the future electricity demand. Therefore, in order to meet the growing electricity demand of the country and reduce the dependence on natural gas based power generation, Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited was formed in 2011 to build a fully government-owned coal-based power plant as a part of the government's plan as coal is relatively cheap.
Power System Master Plan (PSMP) has been formulated by Bangladesh government with the support of Japanese government with the aim of diversification of energy in the country's power sector. With the aim of implementing the government's master plan in the power sector, CPGCBL has taken the initiative to construct coal-based power plants using the latest ultra-super critical technology. For this purpose, CPGCBL will construct power plants following the policy of private power generation or public-private partnership or any other policy of the government.
