Newhaven Town Council is the equivalent of a village parish council. It receives annually a small percentage of the money raised by Council Tax, known as “the Precept”. Eighteen local people serve as Councillors on the Town Council. It is a Public Authority which performs activities of local importance: arrangement of settlements and housing, spatial and urban planning, utilities, child care, social welfare, primary health care, upbringing and primary education, culture, physical culture and sports, consumer protection, protection and improvement of the natural environment, fire and civil protection.
