Description

The Beninese agency for the integrated management of border areas (ABeGIEF) is a public establishment of a social and scientific nature, endowed with legal personality and financial autonomy, responsible for promoting the development of the land, sea and air borders of the republic of Benin.

The ABeGIEF has the task of implementing the national policy for the development of border areas. As such, it is responsible for:

  • to stimulate, promote and coordinate the activities of integrated management of the border areas of the Republic of Benin through the implementation of directives, policies and pan-African, regional, sub-regional and national programs relating to international borders and cooperation cross-border state and local initiatives
  • to periodically update the National Program for the Integrated Management of Border Areas with a view to ensuring the safeguarding of territorial integrity and national identity and the improvement of the living conditions of populations living in border areas
  • to prepare, develop and popularize international legal instruments, legislative and regulatory texts as well as files and all other documents relating to the delimitation, demarcation and reaffirmation of borders
  • to support the civil, paramilitary and military administrations for the purpose of taking into account in sectoral strategies, the resolution of issues relating to intersectoral coordination, the consistency and synergy of public interventions dedicated to border areas
  • to promote and monitor cross-border cooperation as a proactive approach to co-development, regional integration, promotion of peace and good neighborliness with neighboring States
  • contribute to the mobilization of resources to promote human security and increase the supply of security and the supply of social and market services in border areas, including special intelligence, research and verification operations
  • to build socio-community infrastructures for the benefit of the populations of the border areas
