Dr. Essel Ben Hagan holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Energy Modelling and Policy) and he is a Facilitator (Mechanical Engineering) at the Institute of Distant Learning, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. Dr. Hagan is a Senior Energy Expert with 33 years of experience in renewable energy policy and technologies; energy efficiency policy and strategies; and regulation of on-grid and off-grid electricity markets. Dr. Hagan has remarkable experience and skills as well as comprehensive understanding of the following issues in Sub-Saharan Africa: i) access to energy, including renewable energy, particularly solar PV and off-grids; ii) financial, legal, institutional and regulatory setup of African energy markets; iii) energy delivery models to incentivize private sector investments; iv) market research for renewable energy project development and financing. Dr. Hagan has offered consultancy services in renewable energy and energy efficiency to several international agencies including, the World Bank, UNDP, UNECA, GIZ, DANIDA, DFID, Millennium Challenge Corporation and African Development Bank. He has working experience in 18 African countries: Angola, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. He has also published several scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
