About

Nico (Nick) Alexander Guldemond was born on February 28 th 1969 in Voorburg near The Hague. He attended secondary school in Rijswijk. After Graduation (Electrical Engineering), he attended the Leiden University for Professional Education for studying physiotherapy. During his study he was appointed by Dr. A. Weenink as an assistant at the department of Anatomy and Embryology at the faculty of Medicine, Leiden University Medical Centre. In 1993 he appointed as research assistant on a project regarding self-management of osteoarthritis at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research in Leiden, department of Prevention and Health supervised by Prof.dr. M. Hopman-Rock. In 1995 he graduated ‘Cum Laude’ with a manuscript on the screening of cognitive function in children after traumatic brain injury at the Institute for applied neurosciences (ITON) in Amsterdam. For eight years, including the duration of his study, he worked part-time as sales manager for Bever Outdoor Sports in The Hague.

He continued his study at the Faculty of Medicine of Free University in Amsterdam with a curriculum oriented on neurosciences. In 1996 he was appointed by Prof.dr. H. van der Ploeg, as clinical researcher at the department of Medical Psychology (Faculty of Medicine) for the project ‘The quality of life and neuropsychological status of patients with high-grade and low-grade glioma and the quality of life of their partners.’ He was assigned to the department of Epidemiology and Psychosocial research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. He worked under supervision of Prof.dr. N.K. Aaronson. In 1998 he combined his work in Amsterdam with lectures at the Zuyd University in Heerlen. In 1999 he started as a PhD student under supervision of Prof.dr. Walenkamp at the department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Prof.dr. Nicolaas Schaper department of Internal Medicine (Maastricht University Medical Centre), which resulted in a thesis on diabetic foot complications. During his career in Maastricht he worked as a clinical researcher on various clinical and biotechnological research projects and was involved in international programs regarding clinical innovation and medical technology, for which he obtained prestigious research grants. At that time, he was also affiliated to Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research and the Eindhoven University of technology (department of Biomedical Engineering). As founder and CEO of the first (2004) hospital based open innovation living lab (Medical Field Lab), he received great international acknowledgement for creating business through public private partnerships.

Dr. Guldemond was Program Director ‘Health’ at Delft University of Technology and Medical Delta (TU Delft- Erasmus Medical Centre-Leiden University Medical Centre) and Assistant Professor for the department intelligent systems where he performed research on AI and eHealth. In 2012 he was appointed to lead the European Innovation Partnership: Active and Healthy Ageing initiative. He was treasurer of the Innovative Medical Devices Initiative NL foundation (IMDI.nl) and an established international business consultant for companies as Roche, Sanofi, Microsoft, Ascom, Ortec, Bosch, Genzyme, Medtronic, DSM, Philips, Fuji, Campina and institutions as Beijing Academy of Science and Technology, Renmin University China, Tsinghua University China, Imperial College London, RWTH Aachen, Moscow State University, Cleveland Clinic USA, ETH Zurich, National University Singapore and Glasgow Caledonian University Institute of Health Policy & Management, Erasmus University and Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein.

Dr. Guldemond worked in different advisory roles the governments of Ireland, Russia, Brazil, Poland, Japan, China, Iran, Saudi-Arabia, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, UK, the Dutch House of Representatives and a variety of regions across Europe on issues related to healthcare transformation, innovation and technology. He has an extensive experience as board member in different organisations and think tanks: e.g. European platform for patients' organisations, science & industry; EU Horizon 2020 ‘Health, demographic change and wellbeing’; Universities of Technology in the Netherlands and the Netherlands association of universities; commission on normalisation of care, technology and governance at the Royal Netherlands normalisation institute, advisory council 'cloud in health' at Microsoft, the European Brain Council and the Dutch Big Data Alliance. He was architect of the national eHealth program for the Netherlands federation of university medical centres and Livro Branco Saúde Brazil 2019. He eHealth expert (EU4DIGITAL) and H2020 evaluator for the European Commission. Dr. Guldemond is currently Professor Integrated Care & Technology at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

Nick is married to Eva Guldemond-Anema with whom he has three children: Menno, Mechteld en Sophie.
