Description

We are looking for a dynamic, charismatic, and results-driven Director of Individual Philanthropy with a proven track record of relationship building across donor levels. The Director will join an ambitious global resource mobilization team that is working to amplify unrestricted and restricted revenue streams to fund m2m’s strategic plan ambitions.  The successful candidate will have an innate ability to cultivate prospective donors meaningfully and be equally comfortable in public-facing venues as well as in private dialogues.
Reporting to and working closely with the North America Director in Los Angeles, the Director of Individual Philanthropy will maintain a personal portfolio of six, seven, and eight figure individual donors and lead approaches to major philanthropists. This role will also provide strategic oversight for the full range of m2m’s individual giving activities in North America and manage an individual giving officer.
This role will require extensive collaboration with colleagues in the US, Europe, South Africa and m2m African country offices, and contribute to the advancement of a global Resource Mobilization strategy.

Key Performance Areas:
After 12 months in this role, the successful candidate will have:

  • Created a robust pipeline of high value prospects that can sustain exponential growth in unrestricted and restricted income and is aligned with organizational funding needs.
  • Built effective, meaningful pathways for potential major donors to engage with m2m and its programmes.
  • Elevated m2m to become a partner of choice for philanthropists by effectively articulating the urgency and
  • impact of potential gifts to the organization, and engaging donors around their areas of interest.
  • Implemented a more cohesive US individual giving strategy with engagement opportunities across giving levels that generate a consistent pipeline.
  • Supervised a direct report effectively to increase traction with mid-level donors.
  • Actively promoted m2m’s work in all external dealings, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of program offerings and fundraising opportunities.

Fundraising:

  • Manage a portfolio of top individual prospects and key influencers to increase restricted and unrestricted giving to m2m at the highest levels. (1) Identify and attract new individual supporters based in the US with significant capacity. (2) Steward existing major donors to keep them engaged, informed, and feeling valuable in order to renew and increase their giving. (3) Identify and pursue unique opportunities for m2m that could lead to transformational funding.
  • Collaborate with the North America Director to engage the contacts of m2m’s US Board of Directors in meaningful, relevant ways.
  • Maintain an active schedule of personal visits (virtual and in-person when possible) and initiate one-on-one engagement and solicitation opportunities with donors and new prospects.
  • Engage the CEO, Founders, Board, and senior staff as appropriate in advancing prospect relationships, including planning and coordinating their cultivation, proposal and solicitation efforts.
  • Develop and prepare written materials and proposals to engage prospects creatively and effectively based on their full net worth, regularly opening up opportunities for m2m colleagues in North America and globally, and make referrals for potential new Board members, when appropriate.
  • Create tailored events to cultivate individuals and oversee the stewardship of those donors.
  • Work closely with the global fundraising team to coordinate pipelines based on a global strategy and local implementation and positively contribute toward complex approaches to global funders that involve multiple m2m teams.
  • Hold primary US responsibility for African Immersive Experience and other African and/or US major donor trips.

Strategy & Management:

  • Lead the development and execution of a clear individual giving strategy for North America, establishing unique platforms for engaging donors at different giving levels. This includes launching a Major Donor programme for the US, and overseeing the Global Giving Circle (including the production of events and assets), and mid-level/regular giving efforts.
  • Manage a direct line report responsible for mid-level donors (and dotted line reports where appropriate), ensuring that team members are equipped with the resources and direction to achieve their best results and maintain job satisfaction.
  • Input into long range business planning, quarterly forecasting and annual budgeting preparation, collaborating closely with colleagues leading other revenue streams.
  • Work proactively and collaboratively across entities to shape and package giving opportunities for major donor audiences and produce collateral such as case statements and concept notes for use in North America and globally.
  • Provide leadership within the global Philanthropy pod; actively contribute to the writing of global strategies and work plans, ensure global campaigns are maximized for individual donors, and spearhead pipeline meetings.
  • Work closely with the North American Director on budget forecasting and fundraising strategies, as well as support on Board preparation and presentations.
  • Lead on special projects, task forces and initiatives relevant for individual donor audiences.
  • Represent m2m resource mobilization at meetings and events, when appropriate.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven track record of securing gifts (restricted and unrestricted) at the 6-7 figure level and establishing long-term relationships with extremely high net worth executives and families.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation and presentation skills – including developing and producing winning proposals.
  • Results-oriented individual with a track record of personally setting and meeting goals, and a proven ability to negotiate and close deals.
  • Previous experience working in a complex international or global working environment, including working remotely with other team members. Remote management experience a plus.
  • Experience developing and executing the donor journey, and applying process and strategy to diverse fundraising activities.
  • Experience leading and nurturing a direct report, creating a high performance environment through role modeling and using KPIs to monitor performance and increase revenue annually.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Basic understanding of financial management including budgeting and forecasting.
  • IT literate including the use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Skype, SharePoint and donor databases (knowledge of Salesforce a plus).
  • Knowledge of philanthropic motivations and current trends in major giving in North America and globally.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Competencies:

  • Highly effective and versatile communication skills—both written and oral—with the ability to write and edit effectively for a variety of audiences, present externally to multiple and diverse stakeholders.
  • A compelling and persuasive speaker with a love of storytelling who is comfortable with presenting technical data in ways that are relevant to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment – an independent worker with the ability to plan, prioritize and manage a varied workload to meet deadlines, and proactively identify and pursue new opportunities.
  • Ability to work diplomatically and effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds to progress global projects.
  • Ability to thrive in an atmosphere that demands and rewards innovation and creativity, with a high bar for commitment and performance.
  • Conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines, and communicating both internally and externally in a timely and responsive manner.
  • Ability to manage diverse relationships, demonstrated skills in diversity and cultural sensitivity, and maintain a respectful demeanor in context of working within the international development sector.
  • Strong ability to present complex and often sensitive issues in a succinct and compelling manner.

  • The ability to persuasively articulate the case for support for international development and global health.
  • An effective leader with personal gravitas and energy who can work effectively with advisory boards and volunteer committees.
  • A passion for women and girls’ issues and the belief that everyone deserves equal access to quality healthcare.
  • Strong teamwork ethic and a positive attitude.
