EnCompass LLC is seeking a Director for our Learning and Leadership Development (L&LD) team to provide strategic, leadership, management, and technical direction for the L&LD portfolio, including client and contract oversight. The Director will bring thought leadership and innovative approaches to our work and represents EnCompass to clients, partners, and technical communities in Washington, DC, and globally.

EnCompass Directors have responsibility at multiple levels – as individual technical contributors, as leaders of staff teams, and jointly as members of the Senior Management Group (SMG). As a member of the SMG, the Director will embody EnCompass values, ensure open and inclusive communication, and integrate expertise, knowledge, and support throughout the company.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions include:

Technical Management

  • Provide strategic planning, organization, and direction to all work in the learning and leadership development portfolio
  • Build networks and partnerships for innovation across public and private sectors
  • Work with the team to remain informed of latest developments in learning and leadership development and introduce and integrate them into EnCompass’ work
  • Cultivate, develop, and maintain relationships with clients and partners
  • Provide high-level leadership and corporate oversight for learning and leadership development program activities, contracts, and teams to ensure client satisfaction, quality assurance, adequate resources, and budget management and accountability
  • Publish and present significant work in relevant journals, trade publications, conferences, white papers, and blogs
  • Serve as a model of EnCompass’ learning and leadership development best practices, and as a technical mentor for all EnCompass staff regarding learning and leadership development
  • Ensure appropriate support from the learning and leadership development team to the rest of EnCompass’ projects

Personnel Management

  • Identify staffing needs and appropriate team structure; recruit, hire, and supervise staff on the learning and leadership development team
  • Ensure team and individual performance through technical mentoring, setting objectives and quality standards, supervision, and a focus on wellness
  • Strategically leverage the strength and knowledge of the team to determine how to best meet EnCompass and client needs

Business Development

  • Provide strategic direction for new business development in learning and leadership development
  • Identify, develop, and expand partners and sources of new business for the company
  • Lead and/or contribute to developing strategy for proposals related to learning and leadership development, including leading proposal and teaming strategy, developing technical approaches, and writing components of proposals

Company Management Support

  • As a member of the SMG, provide input and feedback, and communicate company policies, strategies, and activities
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other EnCompass teams to support integration of expertise and knowledge across the company
  • Foster an appreciative work culture, with collaboration and teamwork for knowledge sharing and learning
  • Serve as a model of EnCompass approaches, values, and culture for all staff, and especially for members of the learning and leadership development team
  • Engage fully as a member of the EnCompass staff team, including participating in staff meetings and other EnCompass events, and providing support to other team members as needed

Position Requirements

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and 18 years of experience; Associate’s degree and 16 years of experience; Bachelor’s degree and 14 years of experience; Master’s degree and 12 years of relevant experience or
  • PhD and 10 years of relevant experience
    • Graduate degree in international development, instructional design, instructional technology, adult learning, non-formal learning, organizational development and/or leadership, or a related field

Experience and Skills

  • Well-developed professional networks and recognition as a thought leader in the field of learning and leadership development
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing (proposals, reports, and other communications), public speaking, and facilitation—both in-person and virtual
  • Experience working in multiple sectors and in both international and domestic settings
  • Ability to work sensitively in multi-cultural environments and build effective working relations with clients, colleagues, and staff
  • Experience in business development strategy, partnerships, and proposal writing
  • Flexibility and ability to travel; experience working or living overseas strongly preferred

Technical Qualifications

  • Strong background in adult learning methodologies, experiential learning, blended learning, and state of the art learning best practices
  • Significant experience in capacity building and facilitation  
  • Experience in leadership development preferred
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English – especially French, Spanish, or Arabic – preferred

Management Qualifications

  • Strong strategic planning, organization, and problem-solving skills; ability to multi-task
  • Excellent team building and interpersonal communications skills and successful experience in managing and motivating diverse teams of staff and consultants
  • Ability to develop and manage client relationships
  • Successful contract and project management experience in an international development organization
  • Demonstrated ability to identify priority actions and generate and complete work plans within short timeframes
  • Experience managing USAID project(s) strongly preferred
  • Ability to support/mentor team members managing complex contracts
  • Exceptional ability to understand and communicate complex information, and to conceptualize and produce strong, clean and compelling written materials
  • Ability to integrate a gender equality and social inclusion lens into learning and leadership interventions
  • Ability to work in an appreciative, strengths-based environment and guide others in using an appreciative approach
