Position: Environmental Specialist (International)

Project Background

Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) has been preparing Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project 2 – KWSSIP-2 as part of the programmatic engagement over 12 years with support from The World Bank (WB) and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). KWSSIP-2 is one of four Series of Projects (SOPs). WB and AIIB have approved loans for KWSSIP-SOP 1.

MMP a renowned Engineering Consultancy firm of Pakistan requires the services of an international environmental specialist, with minimum fifteen years of experience in preparing Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) reports for donor funded projects and having full command on conducting Cumulative Impact Assessment (CIA).

The hired Consultant will  preferably be based in Karachi to work jointly with environmental and social team of MMP which is already engaged in the preparation of ESIAs / ESMPs of various KWSSIP Projects. The Consult will identify Valued Environmental and Social Components (VECs) relevant to the CIA based on inputs from stakeholders, and will assess the potential impacts of multiple development activities and environmental and social drivers which would affect the VECs. For this purpose, the Consultant must have proven familiarity with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Six Step Approach for the CIA, which includes the following:

  1. Determining Spatial and Temporal Boundaries;
  2. Identification of VECs in consultation with affected communities, stakeholders and identifying all developments and external natural and social stressors affecting the VECs;
  3. Determining present conditions of VEC;
  4. Assess cumulative impacts;
  5. Evaluate their significance over VECs' predicted future conditions; and
  6. Design and implement: (a) adequate strategies, plans, and procedures to manage cumulative impacts, (b) appropriate monitoring indicators, and (c) effective supervision mechanisms.
