Job Title:                                            Communication & Outreach Specialist

Overview: Position will be remote, with possibly two trips to the Mission or to the ESC region depending on the needs of the Mission. Serve under guidance by the USAID/ESC Program Office Director or the Acting Program Office Director and the Mission's Development and Outreach Communications Specialists (DOC). Assist USAID/ESC's DOCs in addressing communications needs for the Mission and satellite offices. Provide support for events planning, management and implementation. In collaboration with the Barbados DOC, providing training to the new DOC the Mission has hired to be resident in Suriname. Draft, update and edit outreach and briefing materials by each of the countries covered by USAID/ESC and by development sector. Coordinate and guide preparation of briefing materials, talking points and other outreach needs relating to USAID programs for the U.S. Ambassador, Deputy Chief of Mission, Mission Director and other USAID and Public Affairs staff. Ensure that all fact sheets and outreach materials are grammatically correct, that typos are corrected and that items are filed in a shared folder available to the appropriate staff across the Mission. Work with Public Affairs in the U.S. Embassies served by USAID/ESC to prepare outreach materials and coordinate events and visits as needed. Provide guidance to Mission staff and to implementing partners regarding outreach materials, branding, optimal communications approaches and other related issues. Monitor and update the Mission's social media accounts as needed.


Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Tasks and Responsibilities:  

  • Assist with the planning and overseeing of outreach events;
  • Assist with writing and publishing fact sheets, monthly highlights, Success Stories, etc;
  • Assist with the public opinion poll and awareness survey on USAID/ESC Presence in the region;
  • Support with the development of a communications/media strategy in order to increase identification/acknowledgement of USAID presence;
  • Support the increased flow of information from Mission to target audiences;
  • Support USAID outreach and communications, branding/marking training for ESC implementing partners
  • Help to increase accessibility of information for target audiences
  • Determine and support ways to better tell USAID’s story in the ESC region, particularly for the Washington audience
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience. This is defined as work in journalism, communications, public relations or public affairs, international relations, international development, public administration, development/area studies and social studies.

Education:  A Master’s Degree and/or Bachelor’s degree in fields such as English, journalism, communications, public relations or affairs, advertising or marketing, international development/affairs and public administration.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Extensive experience writing and editing in English, including but not limited to: press releases, event scenarios, talking points, and social media content and articles is highly desired.

  • Work experience in communication, outreach, and writing for a government agency, international non-government organization (NGO) or foreign donor agency is highly desired.

Working Environment: Work is typically performed in an office environment. Currently the company is allowing for remote work due to COVID 19 in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area. This can be updated by the company.

Physical Requirements:  This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 20 lbs.

Supervisory Responsibility:  This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Travel:  International travel may be required and may include travel to fragile and/or conflict-prone zones.

Work Authorization:  Candidate must be authorized to work in the US.
