This role is based in the Human Settlements Group, which works on urban poverty and
environmental issues, supporting more equitable and sustainable development in urban centres in low- and middle-income countries.
We are currently seeking a Researcher to join the team on a full-time basis for a one year, fixed term contract.

The Role
As a Researcher, you will provide research and strategic support across projects concerned with climate change mitigation and adaptation in cities.
Specifically, you will support the establishment of a new programme of research on urban climate justice, focusing on low income and informal settlements. You will assist in the launch of a knowledge hub and learning network and support research consultancies regarding climate adaptation, our partnerships with networks, grassroots movements and civil society organisations.
You will work across multiple projects, liaising with external partners and colleagues, maintaining relationships and planning meetings and events, as well as spending some time on proposals under the guidance of senior researchers.
Additionally, you will:
- Complete basic research management tasks such as formatting bibliographies, drafting webpage content, drafting project reports
- Hone existing and learn new skills
About You
To be considered as a Researcher, you will need:
- Experience in the climate change and urban development sector, managing project activities, conducting research or policy advising, and writing up results
- Experience carrying out state-of-the-art knowledge and research for publication or internal use
- A good understanding of policy and research debates concerning urban development in diverse geographies of the Global South
- A good understanding of climate change adaptation and mitigation priorities as they relate to cities, their inhabitants, and urban governance
- Familiarity with urban social justice movements and/or intersectional, decolonial, feminist, or queer approaches to international development
- Knowledge of and a strong personal interest in at least one additional sector of
sustainable urban development
- A master’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent work experience and research training
Please note, this role is also open to those who live outside the UK, as long as you have the right to work in the country you wish to reside in.
The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only, and the salary offer in another country would depend on the local terms and conditions. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter.
IIED is a hybrid working organisation and you are likely to be working from home most of the time. As such, you will need a suitable place to work and a reliable, fast internet connection.
