Arab Forum for Environment

📅 24 – 25 October 2023
Muscat, Oman

The second session of the Arab Forum for Environment (AFEN 2023) is scheduled to take place on the 24-25 of October 2023. The Forum is hosted by the Environment Authority of the Sultanate of Oman in Muscat under the theme “Together we face Climate Challenges to ensure Water and Food Security”.

AFEN 2023 is an important platform to address water scarcity that is worsened by climate change in Arab countries. Per capita, water reduction is predicted to reach 460 cubic meters by 2025 compared to 977 cubic meters in 2001. Population growth in the Arab Region reaching approximately 700 million by 2050, intensifies pressure on water resources, thus jeopardizing food security.

The situation disproportionately affects children in MENA, where 90% are already in high-water stress areas, impacting their health and development. The Forum’s collaborative efforts are key in raising awareness and discussing solutions to water scarcity and food security.

The Forum aims to offer a platform of dialogue between different stakeholders, including policymakers, international & regional experts, civil societies, and others, in the fields of environment, climate change, and green economy. Participants will exchange information and expertise related to environmental challenges, particularly climate change, and water and food security, identify strategic partnerships, and establish a regional dialogue for the future.
