The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is supporting the government of Ethiopia in transforming the country’s water, sanitation and hygiene sector into a data-driven, digitally integrated and climate-resilient system, according to a press release published on 24 July 2026. The initiative is backed by funding from the World Bank. It aligns with Ethiopia’s national goals for equitable service delivery. Safe and adequate water supply and improved sanitation services are vital for health, productivity, poverty reduction and sustainable socio-economic development. The effort builds on an existing national framework guiding the country’s water and sanitation reforms.
Launched in 2013, the One WASH National Programme is Ethiopia’s flagship initiative to transform water, sanitation and hygiene service delivery across the country. It provides the overarching structure for coordinated action in the sector. The programme reflects Ethiopia’s long-term commitment to universal access. It serves as the reference point for the ongoing modernization efforts. UNOPS engagement is embedded within this national framework.
Under the initiative, UNOPS will conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to identify systemic gaps in data quality and reporting. It will also support international benchmarking visits to gather information on global best practices in results-based management and digital monitoring. In addition, UNOPS will develop a technical roadmap for modernizing ONE WASH project management systems. These activities are designed to strengthen the sector’s digital foundations. Together, they aim to improve how water and sanitation services are planned and tracked.
