Description

Objective:

The increasing anthropogenic pressure, pollution and desertification of the large parts of Kazakhstan resulted in an intensive loss of species of flora. Most of the type specimens of endangered plant herbarium Fund are in the former Soviet Union. 303 species of rare and endangered plants were included in the first edition of the Red Book, whereas, at present, according to research there are more than 450 species. Thus, it is necessary to include endangered species in the Red Book for preserving them. Rare plant species are detected and identified in order to preserve and create a database of species diversity of flora in Kazakhstan.

Project outcome:

  • Plant species that listed in the Red Book are classified according to the level of significance and threats of extinction.
  • The list of species requiring urgent attention to their distribution is compiled.
  • A map with the application range of rare and endangered flora in Kazakhstan is completed.
  • A herbarium Fund for rare and endangered species is created.
  • Color images of rare and endangered plant species are drawn up.
  • Methodical recommendations for the conservation of species diversity of rare and endangered flora are developed.
  • II part of Red Book “Plants” is ready for publication.
  • A database of endangered species, based on GIS technologies, is completed.

Project duration 1  year.
