Description
The Shalamar Gardens are a masterpiece of Moghul architecture and represent the Islamic concept of paradise.
Following the inscription of the Shalamar Gardens on the List of World Heritage in Danger, the World Heritage Committee allocated funding for the preparation of conservation and rehabilitation proposals. Individual structures within the gardens required restoration, as well as the rehabilitation of the infrastructure of the water system, substantial sections of which dates to the original construction in 1642.
• The Consultancy for Conservation and Development prepared six detailed conservation proposals and budgets for the conservation of different elements of the Moghul imperial garden;
• The proposals were presented at a UNESCO Donors’ Conference in 2004 and funding for implementation secured.
Services provided by the Consultancy for Conservation and Development, in liaison with the Department of Archaeology and Museums and the Central Conservation Laboratory included:
• preparation of project proposals for the conservation of individual structures, including detailed conservation specifications and budgets
• proposals for the beneficial reuse of historic buildings for tourism purposes.
