Description

Reduce as much as possible the physical water losses in the critical water supplying area (WSA) of Casablanca city (supplying time 24h/24h), Lydec, delegated authority operating on the network with the aim of reaching as soon as possible an overall network efficiency of 85%.
PMGWS-WMI were responsible of reaching the following targets in the WSA selected by LYDEC.
• Decrease the minimum night flow, to reach 0.5 l/s/km in the sub-DMAs (use of step testing methods).
• Maintain the results obtained in the WSA using pressure regulation,
• Training the local staff for the hydraulic measurements campaigns, leak detection campaigns and setting-up methodologies of the sub-DMAs.

Description of WMI services

First Package: Diagnosis and decrease of the physical water losses on the entire water distribution network of the WSA No 55 and 96 and for the WSA under the pressure regulation (PR) No 60 and No 85 for a total network length of 1,063 km (27% of Casablanca city)

  • Data collection (maps, production figures).
  • Network updating and GIS mapping of the entire network and fittings.
  • Network partition of the WSA into District Metering Areas (DMAs) for secondary network (diameter < 350 mm) and step-testing design for tertiary network (between 4 and 10 km).
  • Zero pressure tests.
  • Flow and pressure measurements on the DMAs including large night users.
  • Analysis of the Minimum Night Flow and step-testing priority.
  • Leak detection campaigns on the selected steps according to the leakage flow in l/s/km.
  • Maintenance of the results acquired.
  • Submission of reports with the description of works done and results obtained.

Second Package (in parallel of the first package): Diagnosis and flow and pressure measurements on the entire water distribution network of the WSA No 85 and No 140 for a total network length of 1,600 km (40% of Casablanca city).

Data collection (maps, production figures).

Network updating and GIS mapping of the entire network including fittings and facilities.

Network partition of the WSA into District Metering Areas (DMAs) and step-testing design.

Zero pressure tests.

Flow and pressure measurements on the DMAs.

Key results

  • Sectorization of more than 2,600 km of network.
  • Total accrued gains : 5,699,800 m3.
  • Daily gain obtained and maintained using pressure regulation : 8,650 m3 per day.
  • Technology transfer for the PMGWS staff.
  • Organisation of staffing, data, tools and equipement.
