OBJECT: Logistics centre in the area of the floodwater culvert of the river Mosel.

THE SERVICES: Consultancy Study.
A small cape between the river Mosel and Mertert Harbour in Luxembourg is the location of the company Luxport being one of the service companies of the harbour. In general, Luxport transships steel products. Coated coils are stored in a warehouse of the dimensions approx. 40 x 70 m in 2 segments including 2 gantry cranes. On the harbour side, the top of the hall is designed as cantilever which allows a transshipment without weather influences.
Luxport had the intention to extend the hall by 40 x 70 m on the side of the river Mosel for a better employment of the cranes. This extension would reach into the flooded areas of the Mosel by around 33 m width. In case of extremely high floodwaters, the foundation of the hall resp. the fill would influence the free discharge of the floodwater.
The KOCKS ENGINEERS were contracted with the preparation of a consultancy study for approval purposes and agreement with the water protection authorities for the flooded area of the Mosel. In addition 2 variant solutions for the hall foundations should be designed including an estimation of costs. The services were contracted by Luxport in October 2000.
The soil analysis was carried out based on the existing geological study of another construction project. The water levels HQ100 and HQ200 were received from the supervising authorities.
The variant solution ready for approval was designed with a reinforced concrete floor tile for the extension of the hall. Single supports with a deep foundation and with a mushroom-shape impose only a small obstacle for the draining-off of the Mosel floodwater.
The diameter for discharge of the floodwater was reduced by approx. 44 m
The consultancy study examined the capability for approval by authorities for this variant solution.
