The upgrading of the Federal Road B288 to the Federal Motorway A524 including the construction of a new motorway interchange Duisburg Süd is an important project for the connection within the Federal Roads network in the western part of the Ruhrgebiet area. In future, the connection between the roads B8n/A49 on the northern and southern sides with the connection to the roads B288/A524 in western and eastern directions will be crossing.
The road B8n will in connection with the Motorway A59 link the centres of Duisburg and Düsseldorf. The Motorway A524/B288 has a special importance as feeder road from the area Krefeld to the central area of the Ruhrgebiet and the connection to the Motorways A3 and A52 (motorway interchange Breitscheid) and the motorway A59 into the centre of the city Duisburg.
The Federal Roads Authority and the Baucenter Ruhr, Essen contracted the KOCKS ENGINEERS with the design for the motorway interchange Duisburg Süd. The services included the detailed design for the road equipment, the drainage systems and the provisional situation during construction time. Above this, the KOCKS ENGINEERS prepared the lists of quantity to advice the client in preparation of the tender documents.

The entire project area is positioned in a water protection area classified in category III. All carriageways are fitted with curbstones. To ensure drainage water flows in the curbstone channels in case of low grades, special flexible drains were designed which will be fixed in asphalt later. This method was chosen because the client had experienced good results with it in a former project.
The construction works started in February 2010 and it is estimated to last 3 years. Estimations for construction costs are around 52 million Euro.f the junction Duisburg Huckingen.
