The overall objective to which this project contributed was awareness-raising about the benefits and challenges of EU enlargement towards the Western Balkans.
The specific objective was to mobilize and train young leaders as multipliers to raise awareness about the EU enlargement process towards the Western Balkans. In order to meet this specific objective, two approaches have been chosen.
Approach 1 focused on e-learning activities and the use of modern media as communication platform.
This approach includes the development and set up of an e-learning platform.
The e-learning platform mobilized internet users to learn more about the EU enlargement towards the Western Balkans and provide an opportunity to take an e-learning course on the implementation of the developed simulation game. It therefore contributed to a multiplying effect of awareness raising activities about the EU enlargement process towards the Western Balkans. A password secured section provided an e-learning course on the implementation of the developed simulation game on EU enlargement towards the Western Balkan states. It has been made accessible for those who have passed the test of the public section of the e-learning platform and wanted to become a trainer themselves. These users had to fulfil the criteria set out for the selection of young leaders. In addition, the e-learning platform served as an effective instrument to multiply the results of the project activities as well as to ensure the visibility and the sustainability of the project.
Approach 2 focused on the implementation of simulation games as instrument to raise awareness on EU enlargement towards the Western Balkans via personal interaction
Simulation games are prominent and well known in the field of political and civic education. Training workshops on the implementation of the developed simulation game provided by the partners and the later realization of this simulation game by the trained young leaders helped to multiply the effect of awareness raising activities on the EU enlargement process towards the Western Balkans.
During the simulation game, participants not only got to learn and understand how policies work, but they also got the chance to become part of a political process. By simulating the EU enlargement process, participants learned to better comprehend enlargement policies, the institutional framework of the EU as well as conditions and mechanisms of the entire enlargement process. Thanks to that, they can thus better understand the differences between the potential candidate and candidate status and the extent of a reform process each country has to undergo in order to join the EU. In addition to that, working in a group of participants from EU member states and EU candidate and potential candidate countries, simulation games are the best instrument for people-to-people encounters that promote tolerance and understanding through intercultural dialogue.
The project has been implemented in cooperation with Alfred Mozer Stichting, CEVRO, PolAK and PFRS.
