Description

Detailed project description:

The East Java Provincial Government (EJP) is collaborating with the Netherlands under the 2022-2026 Water Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop an integrated management strategy for the Welang River Basin. The partnership aims to tackle severe challenges like flooding, deforestation, and water pollution through a two-phase project. The first phase (March 2020 - January 2022) involved capacity building and resulted in a master plan addressing flooding issues, with young EJP staff playing a key role. The second phase (June 2023 - September 2024) focuses on inclusive stakeholder engagement and participatory design for pilot sites along the river. Unlike the first phase, which was technical, this phase emphasizes cross-sectoral collaboration. To support this, a capacity-building program on "Climate-Resilient Water Management" will be developed to equip EJP civil servants with interdisciplinary skills for effective water management and foster collaboration across different government units.
