Description

Title: Legal Empowerment Basket Fund for Land and Environmental Justice

Program: Civil Society

Program area: Increasing Access to Justice

About this grant: The project goal is to leverage financing for community justice and environment defenders in areas where their land is considered for largescale commercial purposes. Past Mott Foundation support has helped Namati to undertake research on the viability of a private fund to support community land and environmental justice. The grantee also engaged private investors on this, while building support for frontline justice actors to engage in various forums related to private financing. The grantee also created multiple opportunities to bring frontline justice actors together with industry leaders to develop principles for just carbon projects with credits. This grant will assist the grantee in strengthening its support network to call for private financing of frontline justice actors while creating new pathways for financing using carbon credits as an entry point. The grantee will continue to work with other organizations in holding the World Bank and its subsidiaries accountable for not investing in companies and projects that cause harm. Established in 2011, Namati works to build a global movement of grassroots legal advocates who give people the power to understand, use and shape the law.
