Description
Criminal Justice
The grantee is a nonprofit, nonpartisan online news organization, launched with Foundation support in 2014, with the aim of filling a void left by the decline of traditional print journalism, by providing comprehensive coverage of America’s criminal justice system. This award provides unrestricted operating funds to enable the organization to continue to serve as a trusted, influential, and award-winning source of independent journalism, highlighting the need for criminal justice reform, expanding its already large online presence and numerous co-publishing partnerships while reaching new audiences, engaging in more and deeper investigative reporting, and expanding its role as the nonpartisan host of a diverse array of voices and commentary. Through its ongoing coverage of local criminal justice issues, including the misuse and overuse of jails, it’s work will help to increase public awareness of the problem and build national demand for a more balanced approach to crime control that uses incarceration only where necessary, and as part of a flexible range of effective alternatives.
