Description

Project Name: Enhancement of human resource capacity for effective teacher training.

Project Number: NICHE-ZMB-033

Requesting Organisation: Nkrumah University College of Education

Requesting organisation consortium partners: Mukuba University

Project description:

This project has been jointly developed by Nkrumah College of Education (NCE), the lead partner, and Copperbelt College of Education (CBCE)

The two Colleges of Education provide teacher training programmes for secondary education and are both in the process of becoming institutions with university status (‘Universities of Education’). The Ministry of Education has expressed the need to provide further capacity building support to NCE and CBCE during this transition.
One of the requirements is that all lecturers will have at least a master degree in their subject, although many lecturers already have such a degree. In addition, they need to learn how to develop new study material for their own subjects which could be used to deliver new degree programmes once the Colleges have become Universities. This particularly applies to Mathematics and Science which faces a serious shortage of qualified lecturers.
Under the former Netherlands Programme for the Institutional Strengthening of Post-secondary Education and Training Capacity (NPT) the two Colleges received capacity building support in several areas of organizational development. They expressed their wish to further build on the basis provided by the NPT project.
This new NICHE project will continue the reform processes at master level and the development and implementation of tools and systems for student registration, admission, financial administration and quality assurance.

Objectives:
The overall objective of this project is to enhance the management and teaching capacity of Nkrumah College of Education and Copperbelt College of Education in its transition process of becoming Universities of Education.

The specific objectives of this project are:

to strengthen the colleges' educational management capacity in order to support an smooth transition into degree-providing universities.
to enhance their capacity to develop and deliver quality teacher training programmes, especially for Mathematics and the Natural Science subjects;
to consolidate the development and use of ICT-based pilot systems for administration and financial management with a special focus on admission, student registration and accounting.
