Project title: Multi-Method Survey of Extreme Poor in the Philippines
Detailed project description:
This survey is aimed at comparing the living standards of different groups of ultra poor people living in different areas, and understanding the different causes of deprivations faced by these ultra poor people, which include indigenous peoples, informal settlers, urban homeless, indigent elderly and orphans. The study also covers a mapping of the services and facilities provided by the government, donors, NGOs and other external actors, and the services and facilities provided by the local community, to understand intra-community differences in these poor people’s access to such. Basing on results of the survey, the study provides recommendations for the development of policies and projects that will improve living standards of ultra poor in the Philippines.
Four survey methodologies were utilized in this assignment: social mapping, wealth ranking, FGD, and household Interviews. Five Field Teams were deployed for the assignment. Pre-survey activities included refining and pre-testing data collection instruments for the various data collection methods.
Available social services, facilities and infrastructure support and livelihood sources were mapped out as well as community governance structures and land tenure. Ten households in 20 selected communities were interviewed and FGDs conducted to understand their histories and economic status, particularly about their livelihood activities and related challenges, their marginalization and exclusion experience, and their coping mechanisms for economic shocks. The Final Report consolidated the results of all the survey methodologies, with an individual report for each of the 20 communities.
