About

The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey was founded in 1990 by the Human Rights Association (IHD) and 32 human rights defenders. The establishment of the HRFT is the result of the efforts and searches of human rights defenders, both in the İHD and the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) after the military coup of 12 September 1980, regarding the prevention of torture and what can be done for the treatment and rehabilitation of people who have been tortured. HRFT, which has become a school in the field as a result of the knowledge and experience it has accumulated in the documentation of traces of torture and the treatment of those who have been tortured for many years, is an internationally recognized non-governmental organization.

The main goal of the HRFT is to reach a world where torture and other ill-treatment practices are ended as the basis for the protection of human dignity, the development of democracy and the establishment of social peace, and thus there will be no need for institutions such as HRFT.

The main activity of the HRFT is to contribute to the physical, mental and social well-being of the tortured and their relatives by coping with the trauma they experience ,  and to prevent torture through activities at all levels.

HRFT, which has Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers in Ankara, Diyarbakir, Istanbul and Izmir, and Reference Centers in Cizre and Van, has provided treatment and rehabilitation services to more than 18,000 people who have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment since its establishment.

In addition to its treatment and rehabilitation activities, HRFT also carries out studies on the effective documentation, investigation and prevention of torture. He played a leading role in the preparation of the UN Manual on Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and Punishment (Istanbul Protocol), the only international document for the effective investigation and documentation of torture. He also played an important role in the organization of the Istanbul Protocol Trainings, which were prepared to contribute to the effective investigation and documentation of torture against health and legal professionals in Turkey and other countries. In 2008, with the contributions of the Association of Forensic Medicine Specialists and the Turkish Medical Association, in this context, the world was informed about the medical documentation of torture. He also published the Atlas of Torture, a first.

In addition, the Foundation has carried out lobbying and advocacy activities in order to contribute to the establishment and activation of the necessary mechanisms at the local and international level for the prevention of torture since its establishment. He has prepared many reports and publications on violations of human rights and freedoms, especially the violation of the prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment. TIHV has been working on coping with social trauma within the framework of "truth, justice and reparation" since 2000, and organizes events such as national and international training, panels and symposiums.
