About

Alianza Por La Solidaridad

The prolonged Israeli occupation and the collapse of the peace process pose a heavy burden for the Palestinian population that fights for stability, peace, self-sufficiency and human security, in a strongly militarized context. The population is threatened with life and property and is often forced into forced displacement and the physical separation of families. It also suffers restrictions on freedom of movement and access to livelihoods, as well as basic services. It is estimated that more than 39% of the population lives below the poverty line, unemployment rates are 43% in Gaza and in the case of young people between 24 and 35 years old) it reaches 88% among women and 48% among men. The United Nations points out that 2.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance today.

The patriarchal system and its presence in cultural practices subjects women to a situation of vulnerability and discrimination with high levels of gender violence, poverty and scarce development opportunities. Palestinian women hold the lowest labor market participation rate in the world, while bearing most of the family and care responsibilities.

Palestinian women and girls have great difficulty in making decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, and face practices such as early marriage and the refusal of the family or husband to use family planning methods. Legal frameworks are discriminatory, and institutions are weak to guarantee the rights of women signed in international treaties. The vast majority are socially and economically dependent, which limits their autonomy and contributes to increasing rates of gender violence.
