About
Since 2001, WAW has provided advocacy, education, and direct services for women and children across Afghanistan and New York who have endured violations and abuse such as:
- Forced and/or underage (child) marriage;
- So-called “honor” killings and attempts;
- Domestic violence;
- Rape;
- Ba’ad (the custom of using young girls as barter to settle disputes);
- Beatings amounting to torture;
- Forced prostitution;
- Unlawful imprisonment and imprisonment for so-called “moral crimes;”
- Limited access to healthcare; and
- Barred or limited access to education and employment.
WAW’s network of programs and services have become a critical stopgap in the ongoing fight to eradicate gender-based violence and other human rights abuses against Afghan women and girls. Proudly, today, we are the largest women’s organization in Afghanistan providing life-saving medical care and services, mediation, protection, empowerment education and training, and to women, girls, children, and their families.
