On February 20, 1957, the Government of the Republic of Honduras created the National Electric Power Company (ENEE) as an autonomous body responsible for the production, marketing, transmission and distribution of electric power in Honduras.
When the ENEE was constituted, the construction of the first large hydroelectric power station, Cañaveral, as well as the construction of transmission lines and substations to conduct electricity to consumption centers began. Over time the electrical system, known as the National Interconnected System, has expanded and today the transmission network covers the main regions of the country
