Duties and tasks of the Ministry in charge of the environment

The Minister of the Environment and Living Environment ensures the implementation and monitoring of the Government's environment and sanitation policy.
As such, he is responsible for:
In the environmental field
• the protection of the environment and the monitoring of international environmental conventions ratified by the country;
• development and monitoring of environmental education programs;
• coordinating activities to combat desertification and other causes of environmental degradation.

Forests and wildlife
• the constitution, classification, conservation, development and management of the national forest heritage;
• the constitution, classification, conservation and management of reserves of national parks, wildlife reserves and similar reserves in relation with the Ministry of Tourism;
• the valuation of the wildlife potential;
• regulations governing forestry, wildlife and fisheries resources and the control of their application;
• water protection in relation with the competent ministers and local authorities.

In terms of sanitation of the living environment
• initiating, coordinating, regulating and monitoring actions related to environmental sanitation and improving living conditions in both rural and urban areas;
• the development of a national policy for landscaping and beautification;
• the drafting of regulatory texts in the fight against pollution and nuisances;
• local government support for public health;
• the development and control of standards;
• recycling and solid waste treatment.
