About

The DIA, or Te Tari Taiwhenua in te reo Māori, is a public service department of New Zealand responsible for issuing passports, managing applications for citizenship and lottery grants, applying restrictions and gambling laws, keeping records of births, deaths, marriages and civil unions, providing assistance services to ministers and advising the government on a variety of related policies and issues.

The department also provides a translation service, publishes the New Zealand Gazette (the country government’s official newspaper), a flag hire service, manages VIP trips to New Zealand, runs the Lake Taupo harbourmaster's office (under an exclusive agreement with the local iwi) and administers offshore islands.
