Lanka Electricity Company was set up in 1983 as a state owned company registered under the Companies Act. The company was assigned the endeavor of operating the dilapidated electricity networks once owned to the local authorities and taken over. A group of engineers lead by our forefather Mr. H.S. Subasinghe took over this mammoth tasks, then thought as an impossibility. The company which recorded a humble beginning, attracted Asian Development bank funds and converted the networks hands over to them, efficient, using modern technology. The electricity losses of these areas once as high as one forth the purchases were reduced below international best values. Lanka Electricity Company today is recorded as a model Electricity Distribution Utility in Asia. Sri Lanka's best engineering minds with unsurpassable commitment and love to the company has brought this truly local enterprise, today to an international benchmark. Lanka Electricity Company serves 565,000 customers having a network worth of 13bn LKR. We operate under the license issued by the provisions of the Electricity Act, under the regulations of the Public Utilities Commission and under the Public Enterprise Department guidelines. The company operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Energy. We endeavor to operate our network at international standards and serve our customer at a service quality beyond their imagination.
