About
OBMICA was founded in 2009, as a think tank working on migrations that concern the Dominican Republic from a gender perspective and a rights approach. Initially conceived as a joint initiative between FLACSO RD and CIES-UNIBE, entitled Observatorio Migrantes del Caribe, today OBMICA enjoys its own legal status, registered under the name Center for Migratory Observation and Social Development in the Caribbean. You can count on diversified sources of funding, along with the largest donors currently being: the European Union, American Jewish World Service and Norwegian Church Aid (AIN)/Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has also benefited from funds from the World Bank, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN Women, international cooperation from Spain (AECID), members of the United Nations System (including UNHCR, UNICEF and UNESCO), Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI), ICF International/US Department of Labor, and the Julia Taft Fund of the Department of US state. In 2016, ongoing projects include: an action research project that seeks to strengthen the capacity of Dominican civil society to advocate for the rights of migrants, their descendants and children of mixed couples; support for the Dominican@s por Derecho platform; preparation of the first migratory profile of the Dominican Republic and several research and monitoring initiatives on migrants' rights. Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI), ICF International/US Department of Labor, and the Julia Taft Fund of the US Department of State.
