The Burundian Office for the Protection of the Environment (OBPE) is a Public Establishment endowed with legal personality, its own assets and financial and administrative autonomy. It is placed under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock.

The main missions of the General Management of the Burundian Office for the Protection of the Environment are as follows:
1. To ensure compliance with the Water Code, the Forest Code, the Environment Code and other texts related to Environmental Protection;
2. Establish and monitor mechanisms for international trade and exchange of species of flora and fauna;
3. Enforce environmental standards and propose all measures to safeguard and protect nature.
