About

Greenbelt Foundation is an independent charitable organization dedicated to protecting, enhancing, and promoting Ontario’s Greenbelt as a vital and permanent environmental safeguard. Through research, education, strategic investment, and community partnerships, the foundation works to strengthen the ecological health, rural prosperity, and long‑term sustainability of this nationally significant landscape. Its mission is rooted in improving quality of life for Ontarians by ensuring the Greenbelt remains healthy, vibrant, and resilient for generations to come.

Its support focuses on projects that advance environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, rural economic development, climate resilience, and nature‑based tourism. The foundation invests in initiatives that restore natural systems, protect farmland, strengthen ecological connectivity, and promote responsible land stewardship. Its efforts also include public education, community engagement, and applied research that inform better planning, policy, and environmental management across the region.

Its geographic scope is the Ontario Greenbelt, where all investments and initiatives are directed. The foundation supports work across the protected Greenbelt area, including its diverse natural systems, agricultural lands, watersheds, rural communities, and outdoor recreation corridors.

The foundation funds nonprofit organizations, conservation authorities, Indigenous organizations, research institutions, community groups, and local partners working to protect and enhance the Greenbelt. It collaborates with entities that demonstrate capacity for ecological stewardship, community engagement, sustainable development, and measurable environmental impact.

Funding is structured through project‑based grants, multi‑year commitments, and partnership investments supported by contributions from the Government of Ontario and additional public and private donors. This approach allows for both long‑term ecological restoration and timely responses to emerging environmental challenges, ensuring sustained, strategic support for the Greenbelt’s environmental, social, and economic wellbeing.
