About
Ayuntamiento de Ibiza
In 1782, King Charles III granted the town of Ibiza the title of City. The title of City was indispensable for Ibiza to have its own bishopric and, that same year, Pope Pius VI granted us the creation of the Bishopric of Ibiza.
The University House was located in the Cathedral Square, where the different powers of the city were. Today its premises house the Archaeological Museum. With the exclusion in 1835 of the Dominican friars of the Convent, the building was left empty to house several institutions, including the City of Ibiza, which moved there in 1838. Shortly afterwards other dependencies of the The old convent (built during the 16th and 17th centuries) was occupied by the municipal hospital, the prison and the Secondary School.
Today, the City Council of Ibiza occupies the entire civil part of the Convent building. Although Ibiza City Council was the institution of local government of the two islands, in 1837 the structure of municipalities was definitively established and will remain until today, with the creation of 5 more municipalities. This structure was also altered in 1870, when the City Council of Formentera was added to that of Ibiza, a situation that lasted until 1888. The absence of both political and economic benefits caused the population of Formentera to return to claim the segregation of its municipality to form an independent City Council. The municipality of Ibiza, with an area of only 11 km2 was the smallest of the Pitiüses and the second smallest of the Balearic Islands.
