Fred Hollows Laboratory

The Fred Hollows IOL Laboratory Asmara, Eritrea was established in 1994 with the financial and technical support provided by the Fred Hollows Foundation in Australia with the express intention of providing high quality affordable IOLs for use in extra-capsular cataract extraction and lens replacement surgery (ECCE+IOL).

The mission statement of Fred Hollows Intraocular lens Laboratory (FH IOL Lab) – Asmara, Eritrea is to:

Integrate international and Eritrean work culture to maintain a high technology ophthalmic medical devices manufacturing laboratory. Apply Standard Operating Procedures which meet WHO standards and international codes of GMP.
Use modern technology, including computer aided design manufacturing techniques and world standard TQM practices.
Use state of the art intraocular lens designs, and high production volume, ensuring that the economies of scale produce intraocular lenses which are affordable to those in need.
Facilitate the eradication of cataract blindness by providing high quality intra­ocular lenses.
Introduce conducive working environment based on respect for the individual with a corporate commitment to continued career development through education and training.
Process customer & user feed backs correctly and working hard in avoiding drawbacks.
Its objectives also include an expansion of the Lab to increase production of rigid­ & Soft sharp edge lenses and introduce production of other ophthalmic materials.
