The commune of Djougou, birthplace of the Minister of Planning and Development, Abdoulaye Bio TCHANÉ, capital of the department of Donga, is a city located in the North West of Benin, at the gates of the Atacora mountain range, around 461 kilometers from Cotonou. It covers an area of 3966 km2. It is bounded to the north by the communes of Kouandé and Pehunco, to the south by the commune of Bassila, to the east by the communes of Sinendé, N'dali, and Tchaourou, to the west by Copargo and Ouaké. It is mainly populated by the Yom-Lokpa socio-cultural group which makes up 51% of the population, followed by others such as the Dendi and the Peulh. There are also nationals of other ethnic groups such as the Ditamari, the Bariba, the Fon, the Adja and the Yoruba. The most practiced religion is Islam for more than 72% of the population.
