About
The Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees (DACAAR) is an apolitical, humanitarian NGO founded in 1984 with the purpose of providing support to Afghan refugees.
DACAAR began its work assisting Afghan refugees in Pakistan through a sewing project. In 1986 DACAAR took over implementation of water supply projects in Afghan refugee camps from UNICEF. Three years later DACAAR began working across the border in Afghanistan itself.
Since then activities inside Afghanistan have expanded to include improving the quality and supply of safe water, providing sanitation and hygiene education as well as various rural development projects. DACAAR is today a leading agency in the WatSan sector and has installed more than 38,000 water points in rural Afghanistan.
DACAAR’s activities place a particular focus on the most vulnerable groups, such as returnees, internally displaced persons, landless labourers and female headed households.
