About

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has a vision of a world in which everyone can lead a self-determined life in dignity and justice, free from hunger and poverty. Hunger is the biggest solvable problem in the world. WHH wants to do all it can to find a lasting solution to this problem. “Zero Hunger wherever we work by 2030“ – this is the clear goal for the organisation with reference to the Sustainable Development Goals defined in its strategy.

Burundi is one of the world’s poorest countries. More than 74% of the population lives beneath the poverty line, with smallholders comprising most of this number. From 1993 to 2005, the country was wracked by a civil war from which it has hardly managed to recover. Burundi's economic development suffers from political instability and regular crop failures - a consequence of climate change. In particular, poor smallholder farmers can quickly lose their livelihoods due to extreme weather events such as drought and floods.
