Coal India Limited (CIL) State owned Coal Mining Corporation came into existence on November 1975. With a modest production of 79 million tonnes (MT) in the year of its inception, Coal India Limited is today the world's largest coal producer and one of the largest corporate employers with a manpower of 2,48,550 (as on April 1, 2022) . CIL, spread across eight (8) states of India, operates through its subsidiaries in 84 mining areas. Coal India Limited has 318 mines (as on 1st April, 2022), out of which 141 are underground, 158 open mines and 19 mixed mines and CIL also operates other institutions like workshops, training centres, hospitals etc. CIL also has 21 training institutes and 76 vocational training centres. Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM) is a premier center for state-of-the-art management training,

CIL is a Maharatna company - a body privileged by the Government of India to expand operations and emerge as a global giant for state-owned enterprises. It is one of the selected ten enterprises in the category of more than three hundred Central Public Enterprises of the country.

Ten Indian subsidiaries of CIL which are Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Northern Coalfields Limited Ltd. (NCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), CIL Renewable Energy Limited for development of non-conventional/clean and renewable energy and CIL Solar PV for development of solar photovoltaic modules Ltd. is operating.

In addition, CIL has a foreign subsidiary, Coal India Africana Limitada (CIAL) in Mozambique.

Apart from this, CIL has four more joint venture companies - Hindustan Fertilizers and Rasayan Limited, Talcher Fertilizers Limited, CIL NTPC Urja Private Limited and Coal Lignite Urja Vikas Private Limited.

The Assam mines i.e. North Eastern Coalfields (NEC) are directly managed by CIL.
