The State Forest Service is an institution under the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Lithuania. The Office implements state policy in the field of natural resources (forests, national genetic resources of plants) management in accordance with the principles of the European Union's multi-purpose (multifunctional) forestry policy and the principles of access to genetic resources and fair and just sharing of benefits obtained from their use, established in European Union legislation. The service issues permits to cut down the forest, import and use forest reproductive material for forest planting, assesses the quality of forest management works, preparation, cultivation, origin, quality, use, storage and trade of forest reproductive material, assesses the quality, use and restoration of the forest seed base, coordinates genetic the preservation and selection of forest tree resources, the application of forest sanitary protection measures, registers suppliers of forest propagating material, issues the certificate of qualification of an independent wood measurer, supervises the activities of certified independent wood measurers; advises forest managers and users on forest use, restoration, maintenance and protection issues.
