About

Geodetski institut Slovenjie (GIS)

The Institute was founded on December 14, 1953 as an independent research institute at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy of the Technical College in Ljubljana. The initiator of the foundation was prof. Ivan Čuček, who was also his first director. The initial period of operation of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGF) was marked by the lack of equipment and personnel maladministration of Slovenian geodesy.
In addition to carrying out demanding geodetic works, the Institute has provided a number of original solutions for providing precise mechanical geodetic instruments, which is confirmed by a great deal of practical knowledge and inventiveness of individuals. The employees themselves have constructed a leveler, a redesigner, a photoconductor, and a phototypeographer. A number of new technologies have been successfully put into use, especially in photogrammetry.

Due to changes and emerging new needs in our area, the Institute was transformed into the Geodetic Institute of Slovenia on the basis of the Law on Geodetic Activities (Ul 8/2000) and the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia (Ul 84/2000) on 7 October 2000. The Surveying and Mapping Institute of Slovenia is the legal successor of the Institute for Geodesy and Photogrammetry and is registered in the court register at the District Court in Ljubljana. The founder of the Institute is the Republic of Slovenia, and the founder's rights and duties are exercised by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. The Institute is a legal entity governed by public law with the rights, obligations and responsibilities laid down by law and the said decision on transformation. Supervision over the work of the Institute is under the responsibility of the Main Office of the Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia.
The Surveying and Mapping Authority of Slovenia performs public service development and technical tasks of the National Geodetic Authority in the field of the basic geodetic system,
state topographic and cartographic databases and real estate databases, implementation projects in the field of basic geodetic system, cartography and property registration and in the field of development and research activities, in accordance with the Institute's work program, which is an integral part of the annual work program of the National Geodetic Authority. The Institute performs activities for the market against payment for municipalities and other contracting authorities to the extent determined by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia upon the adoption of the annual work program of the National Geodetic Authority.
The institute has led and participated in various tasks such as real estate inventory, transition to a new coordinate system, production of a topographic map in the scale of 1: 50,000, seafarers' charts and other tasks. All the employees of the Institute are responsible for the transfer of knowledge and experience to different groups of users, as well as the popularization of the profession in the form of consultations, pedagogical processes, and the organization and implementation of training and training courses within the framework of the Training Center for Geomatics (ISG).
