About
Médecins Sans Frontières (Médecins Sans Frontières) (MSF) is an independent international humanitarian organization committed to bringing aid to those who need it most without discrimination of race, religion or political beliefs.
The organization was set up in 1971 in France by young doctors and journalists who volunteered in the late 1960s in Biafra, Nigeria. While aiding victims in the midst of a brutal civil war, practitioners realized the limitations of international humanitarian aid: the difficulty of access to the site and the bureaucratic and political obstacles that made many shut up, even in the face of blatant situations. MSF emerges as a humanitarian organization that associates medical aid and public awareness about the suffering of its patients, giving visibility to realities that can not remain neglected. In 1999, MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The work of Médecins Sans Frontières is, above all, medical. The organization provides care and preventive care to those who need it, regardless of the country in which they are located.
In situations where medical performance is not sufficient to ensure the survival of a particular population - as in cases of extreme urgency - the organization can provide water, food, sanitation and shelter. This type of action is given primarily in periods of crisis, when the previous balance of a situation is broken and people's lives are threatened.
