The National Institute of Statistics was created on November 25, 1947, the objective was to set up an institution whose mission would be to produce the main official statistics of the nation. Since then, while its mission has remained broadly unchanged, the institute has changed names more than once. 

INSTANT must perform several functions, including:
* The production of relevant and credible statistical data;
* Research and standardization;
* The analysis and development of statistical outputs;
* Processing and dissemination of statistical information;
* Advisory support;
* Technical cooperation;
* Training;
