About
The Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (Flacso) is an international, autonomous and intergovernmental organization, founded in 1957 by the Latin American States, which welcomed a recommendation from the XI General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to Culture (Unesco).
It is currently composed of 19 Member States that carry out academic activities, research and cooperation modalities in 14 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in Spain. All these units make up the Flacso System.
Its governance structure includes:
- General Assembly (of the Member States) laying down the general policy of the Institution.
- Superior Council (made up of diplomatic representatives of states with academic headquarters) that mediates/follows up between the General Assembly and the day-to-day management of the organization.
- Steering Committee (composed of the directors of academic units and elected by the Assembly, the Secretary General, and a representative of the teachers) who is responsible for planning and executing the activities of the Faculty.
- Each Academic Unit , in addition to its director, is managed by an Academic Council (composed of area coordinators, a representative of the faculty/researchers and a student representative) who is responsible for proposing and evaluating institutional activities.
- The Secretary General (with current headquarters in Costa Rica) is the same as the Assembly, the Board of Governors and the Steering Committee.
